C is for Calling.

For those new to my blog: I publish a flash fiction piece every Tuesday. Usually it’s something I’ve entered into one of the weekly flash fiction competitions I like to use to sharpen my skills.

This was my entry for Microcosms Fiction on 20 January. The prompt was:

Song title: Good Morning Good Morning

Genre: Fairy Tale

I had to use the spin option to get a new prompt – the original just wasn’t inspiring me.

“Our contest this week begins with just TWO things: song title and genre.

We spun, and our two elements are – song title: Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite!, and genre: Horror”

Calling It

By Ronel Janse van Vuuren

Several maidens danced over the meadow, singing good morning to each other and everyone they passed. The birds joined in and it became the noisiest early morning the wolf had had in a very long time.

Twenty-four flash fiction tales filled with folklore and mythology, creeping in on the edges of nightmares, and twisting around the various sub-genres of fantasy.

I really liked the idea of taking the usual fairy tale tropes and turning it on its head. And, I know some people have found it confusing, “calling it” is a reference to calling the time of death… Yes: the bacon is a reference to the three little pigs 😉

Judge’s favourite line: His right eye ticked, the ear-plugs had stopped working by the time the fourth maiden had opened her mouth and all the bacon in the world couldn’t make him feel better.
