When I was teaching in elementary school, I used to run a Cinderella series of classes. Once the students understood the basic structure of most Cinderella tales (I went through various versions with them, and their main classroom teachers did other tales from around the world). I’d break the kids into groups. They had to choose a director, actors, and scribe. They needed to come up with the name of their Cinderella, the magic object, something that transformed, a love interest (if they wanted one: a few groups gave the Cinderella character status power), and a magical being. There were wild stories of The Giant’s Nose to a spaceship colony.
I told The Egyptian Cinderella (supposedly the first one); The Rough-Face Girl (Native American), Yeh-Shen, and depending on the class either Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters or one of a dozen others.
Loved that unit. The kids overall were a kick.

Sounds like a great class to attend. I like the strange Yeh-Shen tale 🙂

Oh wow! That sounds awesome. I would have loved to be part of the classes even if it’s only to read the stories. I’d definitely enjoy reading all the retellings. Thank you for sharing.

You’re welcome. One class did make a book out of their class stories (2nd graders). Not sure where I put it. I’ll have to look for it when life calms down around here.

That Cinderella myth is enduring. It’s one my students would attempt to rewrite as an exercise every year. The book sounds good!

Thank you so much, Jacqui. You are absolutely right. Not only is it enduring but also always fantastic to read, and write.

Thanks a million for the interview, Ronel. The whole publishing experience would have been less fun and more frustrating without you. You are an excellent storyteller, and most importanly, one of the best fellow authors with whom to work. I appreciate you to the moon and back. Thank you very much. 🤗❤

You’re welcome, Debs 🙂 I’ve actually found that writing retellings is a lot of fun — almost like the make-believe games played as a little girl 😉
