I is for invitation.
Stories invite us to write them.
Maybe through dreams, visions or an a-ha! moment. Something was the catalyst for writing that newest bestseller you’re working on.
As writers, we are constantly invited to get to know our characters. Whether it is by flipping through fashion magazines or going to a MMA class to find out what the hell mixed martial arts really is – because for some reason your MC does this to blow off steam – our characters invite us to get to know them and their world.
Yet, sometimes we get stuck in plotholes. Though there is a way out of those sticky spots of meh…
Here’s what I wrote in November during NaNoWriMo to inspire my fellow Wrimos:

Go ahead and accept invitations from fictional friends. Be amazing.

My characters are disgusted with me. I keep putting them off to participate in month-long blog hops, edited old stuff, feed my kids, sleep, whatever. They feel neglected. Sorry guys! I haven’t forgotten you. Really!

I get it, there’s so much to do and only so many hours to do it. My characters tend to haunt my dreams, though, if neglected too long…

So many Voices, so little time.
Yep, we talk. Sometimes I listen. Other times I argue. “You can’t do that. What about the MC? He’ll be really POed.”
It’s a scary business. But only for those humans who try to barge into my private conversations.

The scared humans also think that there is something really wrong with you when you do online clothes shopping with your fictional friends and don’t buy a thing 🙂

I try to let the characters speak on their own, they get vociferous, all at once. When I try to say one at the time, please, they quiet down for duration. Oy, no pleasing them. Guess I should just let them speak whenever they want to.

Wonderful post! I agree with you. I don’t think I’ve gone out looking for any of my stories. They come knocking on my door. Heck, most of them enter without any invitations from either side. They just come barging in and take over.

Lovely research, FANTASTIC!
The folklores say, “do stray from the written word” only that stops a story from flowing. ‘The Hare in the Moon’ is an old, old Chinese tale before Buddhism, etc. Stories shift to meant the needs of the tellers at the time and their use of the stories.
