I is for Idiocy
This was my entry for Cracked Flash Fiction Competition on the 4th of February. It also won Honourable Mention 🙂 The prompt was: ‘Try a different one.’
For those new to my blog: Twisted Tale Tuesday is where I share flash fiction pieces I’ve written for various competitions and online platforms. Here I not only share the story, but also the thoughts behind it. Enjoy.
Idiocy

‘Try a different one. Come on!’ Maggie urged, trippling in place.
‘I already did! The chimera is just too strong!’ Danielle watched the monster in dismay.

While writing this, I listened to Bon Jovi’s Blaze of Glory playing in my head – yeah, earworms are rather inspiring when not irritating the hell out of you. Again, I wrote this before my morning coffee – sometimes good things happen in that haze before waking up. Oh, for those of you who think I’m crazy using “trippling”: it’s a South African word used for horses when they “tripple from left to right on the trail”, “anxiously move their legs” and so on. I felt it fitting for a centaur.
So, what do you think? Anything you’d change about this piece? Feedback is always welcome, leave your thoughts in the comments.

I liked ‘trippling’ – I took it to mean extreme pain, as in even worse than ‘doubling up’. Then I realised she was a centaur 🙂

Trippling is a great word – though I had no idea what it meant until you explained it. Who knew beasts could be distracted with cheese! 🙂

My Rottweilers are inordinately fond of cheese, so I thought something scarier would be too 🙂

Chimeras are obviously big eaters. Messy, too!

I’m thinking they’d be ridiculed for fighting the terrible beast with… berries and cheese haha. Good fun and good story. 🙂
