This was my entry for Cracked Flash Fiction Competition on the 15th of January 2017.
The prompt was: The captain of the guard watched silently as two figures moved through the shadows.
By Ronel Janse van Vuuren
The captain of the guard watched silently as two figures moved through the shadows. He fervently hoped that they would be successful.
Once they were out of sight, he sighed softly. Now there was nothing left but to wait.
When dawn streaked the sky with red, the captain of the guard knew that the tyrant-king was dead.
I was playing around with the idea of microfiction. And honestly, I didn’t have a lot of time to write – sometimes ones fur-children have to come first.
Tony is doing a lot better now that he did for most of January, and I think he’s finally reached a stage where he can accept that Emmett isn’t coming back. Cal took all of this in stride, though he did insist on a lot more cuddle time.
What do you think of this story? Does it work at only 57 words? I think it says a lot, but then I am biased 😉
