I love how music influences ideas and writing. I was listening to my playlist for Ray of Night (the story I wrote during NaNoWriMo 2015) and suddenly a short story flashed into existence. And it doesn’t have any Faeries in it… So peculiar of me.

love roses clock

by Ronel Janse van Vuuren

The clock ticks on. Tick-tock. We both know that we only have a few precious days left together before we have to say that final farewell. Yet I look shyly away when our eyes meet for too long.

I have so many dreams for a future of us together. Tick-tock. Yet I never share them with you. I’d rather talk about commonalities and the dreams of others; and rejoice in the fact that we can talk and laugh so easily together.

The two of us walk through the place that we won’t visit again for the foreseeable future and share old stories. Tick-tock. But we never talk about us. I’m panicking: how can I talk about matters of the heart when we’re both too scared to fall?

It’s a drawn-out farewell as the last hours tick by. Tick-tock. Miserable, we hold each other and say goodbye. Other words escape me. The future is veiled in uncertainty…

Now it’s more than a decade later. I’ve arrived uninvited; hoping that you’d know that for me, we were never done. My heart’s pounding. Tick-tock. Despite the time that had passed you’ve never forgotten me either.
